Voices that Shape the Classroom: A Campus-Wide Redesign Grounded in Faculty and Student Data (a hybrid classroom experience*)
Indiana University Bloomington recently completed an extensive campus-wide Classroom Needs Analysis (fall 2024) to identify barriers and opportunities for aligning classrooms, instructional technology, and pedagogical practices. Involving 1,278 faculty and over 2,000 students, this analysis uncovered critical insights: 60% of faculty urgently need flexible furniture to effectively implement active learning, while 90% of students prioritized clear visibility and comfort in classrooms. These findings led to an institutional recommendation—converting 50% of classrooms into active learning classrooms by 2030. This session will share IU’s structured, evidence-based approach to drive lasting institutional change. Panelists—leaders in instructional technology, faculty development, and learning spaces—will illustrate how clear data and collaboration across campus silos supported teaching innovations and student success. IU leveraged robust data (classroom data, surveys, and focus groups) to generate urgency, build coalitions, and implement meaningful wins. Panelists will provide practical examples of embedding equitable, active learning principles into physical classroom redesign, technology infrastructure improvements, and faculty professional development. Participants will be equipped with ideas to champion teaching innovations, inform learning space planning, and promote equity on their own campuses through the use of our scaffolded worksheet and discussions.
* Brought to you through a collaboration between EDUCAUSE and ETC (Educational Technology Collaborative), this hybrid classroom pilot program allows us to bring the event experience to a select group who cannot attend in person. The hybrid classroom experience leverages cutting-edge technology to allow the remote audience to participate real-time with the in-person audience. Representatives from the tech companies providing equipment will be present to answer any questions.
