The Role of Modern Digital Identity and Access Management in the Post-Pandemic Institution
The pace of acquisition and adoption of technology in higher education in response to the near-instantaneous shift to virtual instruction, work, and engagement on college campuses has been breathtaking, including the rapid adoption of digital credentials, virtual proctoring, hybrid classroom technologies, expanded ERP capabilities, cloud, SaaS solutions, and greater online collaboration. Digital identity and access management (digital IAM) has the potential to become foundational by enabling online interaction and securing the student/faculty/staff experience. In the postpandemic future of higher education, identity will underpin security, personalization, and privacy, and become a prerequisite to genuine, authentic online experiences. Digital IAM addresses many of the challenges that higher education executives face, including reducing friction in the student authentication experience across myriad systems, managing multiple affiliations that students, faculty, and staff have, not only within their own institutions but potentially across the higher ed and research spectrum that spans institutional as well as geographic boundaries and borders. This work can accelerate the deployment of updated student enrollment, retention, and alumni engagement systems.
