Institutions of higher education face challenges hiring and retaining technology staff, the tech industry faces challenges diversifying its workforce, and students need help translating knowledge and skills developed in college to the world of work. St. Edward's University Office of Information Technology (OIT) partnered with the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) to develop grant-funded internships to address these challenges. In this poster, we will showcase our model student employment program that integrates grant-funded, first-gen interns to help build technology staff capacity. We will share frameworks and best practices to implement this program at your institution, discussing building partnerships, framing and creating meaningful work experiences that serve experiential learning outcomes and National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) competencies, and developing pathways for future internships and jobs.
