The University of Illinois New Literacies initiative engages today’s students around critical topics to prepare for lifelong success. This series of self-paced modules is designed to impart essential skills early in a student’s academic career. Topics like financial success and media literacy are freely distributed through interactive modules designed to take one hour or less. Faculty enthusiasm in the adoption of these modules either for credit, or as extra-credit activities has generated enough interest to continue developing the series. New topics for fall 2023 include cybersecurity, library research skills, learning how to learn, and nutrition and wellness. Each module offers research-based content in a fully accessible and highly engaging format and can be viewed on any connected device. Thousands of satisfied students speak glowingly of the profound impact. This series lays a solid and engaging foundation of skills essential to fulfilling requirements of holistic student success in college and beyond.
