Finding a Way Out of the Mire: A Practical Approach to Data Ethics

Wednesday, October 11, 2023 | 1:30PM–2:00PM CT | W185a, Level 1
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation/Panel Session
Questions about how to engage with data ethically arise almost daily. What should be collected? Who can access data? How can we balance transparency and privacy? What kind of analysis is credible? How can we use data science practices or AI? However, guidance about data ethics often feels abstract and difficult to apply in real-world situations. This presentation will explore how the data team at Vanderbilt University is collaborating with researchers and clinicians, and drawing on models from philosophy, research ethics, privacy, and bioethics, to develop a more practical approach and toolkit to making ethical data decisions.
