Navigating Neurodiversity: Designing Neuroinclusive Learning Experiences (separate registration is required)
Neurodivergent learners account for anywhere between 11 and 30 percent of the undergraduate population in higher education institutions. Although neurodivergent learners can experience challenges both academically and socially, many neurodiverse conditions confer certain talents or advantages, such as above-average IQ scores. Unfortunately, many educators do not know how to support neurodivergent learners, largely due to the fact that each individual may have specific needs. This can be problematic for instructors when trying to offer support that is both effective and meaningful for each learner. An even greater challenge arises when a learner does not have an official diagnosis and is not eligible to receive official accommodations.
This design-thinking workshop has been crafted to instill a deeper understanding of neurodivergent learners’ experiences and to better understand the types of support they need in order to be successful in academia. Attendees will participate in the design-thinking process to investigate fundamental concepts, explore learning experiences from the perspective of a neurodivergent learner, and develop a customized set of strategies that align with their teaching methods and subject-matter expertise.
