In spring 2023, Marshall University implemented a HyFlex pilot program to determine the feasibility of offering a campus-wide approach to an on-demand, in-demand curriculum for its programs. During this pilot, faculty perceptions of implementing HyFlex were measured to determine how the university might structure its university-wide engagement of flexible learning initiatives. The pilot’s purpose was to understand, from a faculty perspective, issues related to organizational support, technology, and spaces that hinder or promote faculty ability to offer a HyFlex course successfully and equitably to students. The findings of Marshall’s HyFlex program concluded that the implementation of flexible learning included many different modalities. Recommendations include (1) offer flexible learning options specialized to the academic program to include a mixture of hybrid, online, blended, and in-person courses; (2) invest in the university classroom technology and learning management infrastructure; (3) design a classroom support model for hybrid classes that will assist faculty; and (4) implement a faculty development program around flexible learning that includes best practices and course templates for modality selection. This presentation will focus on the execution of the pilot study, the findings, and the next steps for Marshall University toward an on-demand and in-demand way of learning for its students.
