Teachers in the Bleachers: Engaging All Voices with Synchronous, Text-Based Discussion

Wednesday, October 11, 2023 | 10:15AM–11:00AM CT | Poster #120, Halls F1, F2, Level 3
Session Type: Poster Session
Delivery Format: Poster Session
This panel session presents ways to engage all students in active learning by interacting with a common text or video lecture during synchronous class sessions (both in-person and remote). Instructors will explain and demonstrate their methodology. One uses Google Docs and Teams, and the other uses YouTube Premieres Simulive learning sessions. Both invite student reflections in text-based comments during class, while instructors respond “in the bleachers.” With this methodology and key technologies, panelists expanded the number of students who engage in class. Participants will discuss the benefits of such activities for students of different learning strategy preferences, backgrounds, and perspectives.
