Beyond Bloom's: Redesigning Learning for the Age of Generative AI (Separate registration is required.)

Tuesday, September 29, 2026 | 8:00AM–4:00PM MT
Session Type: Additional Fee Program
Delivery Format: Preconference Programming

Bloom's Taxonomy has shaped higher education for 70 years, but generative AI has broken its core assumption: that a finished product proves that learning has occurred. This hands-on workshop brings together three researchers who have each developed post-AI frameworks to replace what Bloom's can no longer do. Participants will work through three complementary approaches: the Inverted Bloom's Taxonomy (which repositions "Create" as the beginning of learning, not the end), and the UnBlooms™ Framework (a recursive, metacognitive alternative designed for AI-mediated learning across disciplines). Through collaborative activities, case studies, and real course redesign work, participants will leave with practical tools to rethink their assessments, assignments, and learning outcomes for a world where answers are instant but understanding is not.

Outcomes of this workshop:

  • Attain a practical understanding of why Bloom's Taxonomy struggles in AI-mediated learning environments and evaluate three evidence-based alternatives.
  • Apply the UnBlooms Metacognitive Awareness Scale and Inverted Bloom's framework to authentic course redesign challenges.
  • Design learning experiences that position reflection as a continuous process rather than a final stage of learning.
  • Create a decision framework for determining when generative AI enhances learning and when it should be constrained or excluded.

Note: Participants who successfully complete this preconference workshop will be eligible to receive an EDUCAUSE microcredential. To earn this digital badge, you must complete a brief workshop evaluation and share two key learning outcomes from your experience. All registered participants will receive an email on October 5 with instructions for completing these steps. Completion of both is required. To learn how to accept and make the most of your microcredential, visit the EDUCAUSE Microcredential website.
