From Adoption to Impact: Introducing the Responsible Instructional Innovation Framework (RIIF)

Colleges and universities invest heavily in educational technology, AI, and instructional innovation; yet adoption is uneven and student outcomes often go unmeasured. Why? Because most adoption frameworks focus on tools and not the people responsible for transforming teaching. This session introduces the Responsible Instructional Innovation Framework (RIIF) — a sequential, evidence-informed model that reframes instructional innovation as an identity-mediated, institutionally supported process. RIIF proposes a four-stage model: Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) build faculty capacity, which shifts faculty professional identity, enables responsible innovation adoption, and produces measurable student success outcomes. The framework includes a feedback loop in which positive student outcomes reinforce faculty innovation identity, creating self-sustaining improvement. In this session, participants will learn RIIF's model, apply it to diagnose an innovation challenge at their own institution, and build a CTL-Anchored Implementation Plan to take home. The session's central argument: academic development centers are a critical infrastructure for converting innovation investment into student impact.
