The Architect’s Compass: Orchestrating Harmony in the Enterprise (Separate registration is required.)

Tuesday, September 29, 2026 | 8:00AM–4:00PM MT
Session Type: Additional Fee Program
Delivery Format: Preconference Programming

How do architects guide teams without slowing them down? The Architect’s Compass offers a practical answer—a framework that provides direction without prescribing decisions. This workshop introduces the Compass as a way to move beyond rigid standards and one-size-fits-all governance toward an approach grounded in shared principles, clear context, and purposeful guardrails. Rather than enforcing control, architects enable better decisions by helping teams understand intent, trade-offs, and desired outcomes. Participants will learn how to apply the Compass to create alignment, support consistent decision-making, and maintain coherence across systems—while still enabling innovation and adaptability. The session explores how to define effective principles, establish decision boundaries, and guide teams through complexity with clarity and confidence. Through interactive exercises and real-world scenarios, attendees will gain practical techniques to apply the Architect’s Compass—helping them influence outcomes, improve collaboration, and balance speed with resilience.

Outcomes of this workshop:

  • Align Without Controlling: Use principles and guardrails to enable autonomous team decisions while maintaining alignment with enterprise goals.
  • Create Coherence in Decentralized Systems: Design modular, interoperable systems and shared context so independent teams can move fast without fragmentation.
  • Influence Architecture at Scale: Guide decisions across distributed teams using context, constraints, and collaboration, rather than centralized authority.

Note: Participants who successfully complete this preconference workshop will be eligible to receive an EDUCAUSE microcredential. To earn this digital badge, you must complete a brief workshop evaluation and share two key learning outcomes from your experience. All registered participants will receive an email on October 5 with instructions for completing these steps. Completion of both is required. To learn how to accept and make the most of your microcredential, visit the EDUCAUSE Microcredential website.
