Unsure Where to (Re-)Start with IT Governance? Shared Lessons from 3 Leading Universities (Separate registration is required.)

Tuesday, September 29, 2026 | 8:00AM–4:00PM MT
Session Type: Additional Fee Program
Delivery Format: Preconference Programming

This interactive workshop brings together IT governance leaders from the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Notre Dame; and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to explore how complex institutions design and sustain effective IT governance. Participants will examine the core infrastructure required to operationalize governance, including decision-rights frameworks, committee and portfolio structures, and stakeholder engagement models. The session will highlight how governance aligns with funding to ensure priorities translate into measurable outcomes. Through shared insights, institutional journeys, role-playing, guided reflection, and peer review, attendees will engage in both practical discussion and hands-on application. The workshop will address common challenges across public and private institutions such as balancing inclusivity with decision velocity, leveraging existing committees and processes, and communicating governance value. Participants will also explore approaches to assessment and continuous improvement. Throughout the session, attendees will apply concepts to their own context and leave with a practical, institution-specific blueprint to guide governance conversations and next steps on their campuses.

Outcomes of this workshop:

  • Participants will be able to recognize common challenges and pitfalls so they can be prepared to navigate them within their own institutions.
  • Participants will be able to articulate the value of IT governance in general and for their institutions.
  • Participants will be able to thoughtfully chart a course towards implementing or improving IT governance at their institutions.

Note: Participants who successfully complete this preconference workshop will be eligible to receive an EDUCAUSE microcredential. To earn this digital badge, you must complete a brief workshop evaluation and share two key learning outcomes from your experience. All registered participants will receive an email on October 5 with instructions for completing these steps. Completion of both is required. To learn how to accept and make the most of your microcredential, visit the EDUCAUSE Microcredential website.
