Reducing On-Campus COVID Exposure and Energy Use with Wi-Fi-based Occupancy Data

Thursday, October 27, 2022 | 4:00PM–4:45PM MT | Mile High Ballroom 2B3B, Ballroom Level
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Demonstration
We will show how PSU saved energy by linking HVAC controls to information derived from Wi-Fi occupancy data. With COVID requiring greater-than-normal air exchange in campus buildings, this same technology brings clean outside air to classrooms that have the most students, according to the occupancy data. The system dials down HVAC in rooms that are shown to be empty, reducing energy consumption by up to 20%. We will also present 3D visualizations of campus occupancy and advanced COVID ventilation.
