Basic Cybersecurity Readiness for Research: An NSPM-33 Conversation

Institutions are now expected to demonstrate basic cybersecurity readiness under National Security Presidential Memorandum (NSPM) 33. What that looks like in practice remains unclear and highly variable, particularly given that institutions vary in size and resources. Through a new NSF Research on Research Security (RoRS) award (2537044), we are studying how institutions interpret these expectations, how governance and risk decisions are made, what frameworks they rely on, and where the greatest challenges appear. This facilitated discussion uses real-time polling to gather insights from the community about current practices and readiness levels. We will share early signals from our national landscape analysis and invite participants to compare what they are seeing at their own institutions. The session will map patterns across various readiness categories. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how peers are approaching research cybersecurity and where common friction points exist.
