Beyond the Whiteboard: Standardizing Classroom Annotation Tools

As hybrid and synchronous online learning environments mature, digital annotation tools offer a proven method to facilitate active learning. However, many institutions struggle with uncoordinated "tool sprawl" that burdens IT support and overwhelms instructors. This poster details how our institution addressed this challenge by initiating a cross-departmental evaluation of annotation hardware and software. By uniting instructional design and IT teams, we implemented a centralized device management pilot to standardize classroom technology while preserving faculty choice. The presentation provides an objective overview of the curated tools selected for our pilot, highlighting their pedagogical applications across various disciplines, from STEM to the humanities. Attendees will explore the practical outcomes of our collaborative process, including lessons learned in balancing cost, IT usability, and pedagogical impact. The session offers an actionable framework for peer institutions seeking to mitigate technology silos, streamline device management, and effectively support active learning in hybrid environments.
