Bridging the Gap: Using Simulation to Enhance Project Management Learning

Project management education often emphasizes theory over practice, leaving students underprepared for real-world complexity. This poster presents findings from a mixed-methods action research study examining the use of a simulation-based learning tool (SimulTrain®) in a capstone course for nontraditional undergraduate students. Results show significant gains in project management knowledge, particularly in process-based domains, along with qualitative evidence of increased engagement, confidence, and decision-making ability. Students described the simulation as an authentic, high-impact learning experience that helped bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and applied practice. This session shares key findings, design insights, and practical strategies for integrating simulation into project management and professional studies curricula. Attendees will explore how simulation-based learning can support student success, engagement, and workforce readiness in higher education.
