By Humans, for Humanity: The Case for Responsible AI

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how universities teach, conduct research, deliver care, and serve their communities. The question is no longer simply whether higher education will use AI, but whether we will shape its use with intention. That requires a human-centered approach that keeps people, purpose, and trust at the center. Responsible AI is more than a set of principles. It requires thoughtful governance, strong cybersecurity guardrails, careful stewardship of data, and ongoing evaluation. Most importantly, it requires human judgment to remain central, including the judgment to recognize when AI is the right tool and when it is not. In this conversation, we will discuss how the University of Michigan is putting responsible AI into practice through a secure and flexible ecosystem designed to expand access, encourage experimentation, and preserve institutional choice. This includes retaining control of university data and avoiding a strategy that depends too heavily on any single model, platform, or provider. The message is clear: Do not just adopt AI. Shape it. Responsible AI is not one decision made at the beginning. It is how every decision is made. Higher education has an opportunity to ensure that AI remains by humans, for humanity, and directed toward transforming lives and serving the public good.
