Cybersecurity as a Team Sport: Driving Action and Alignment with Shared Metrics
Cybersecurity is often treated as a technical problem. However, success ultimately depends on how well the entire institution shares understanding, ownership, and action. As highlighted in the EDUCAUSE Top 10 Trends for 2026, collaborative cybersecurity is emerging as a key priority for higher education. At UVA, fragmented systems and distributed practices made it difficult for leaders and teams to consistently understand cybersecurity conditions or operate from a shared set of facts. This session shares our multi-year journey to change that dynamic by aligning administrative and IT leadership, integrating data from across dozens of systems into a unified foundation, and translating that data into a transparent, unit-level security scorecard. Drawing on perspectives from senior IT leaders, we will highlight how this work intentionally combined data, communication, and change management to “get everyone on the floor,” and enable more consistent conversations about risk, clearer priorities, and a more collaborative team-based approach to cybersecurity. Attendees will gain practical insights into how to build shared visibility, align leadership, and foster institutional ownership of cybersecurity. Because lasting security depends on every player working from the same game plan.
