Designing the Future Today: The MOSTLA Model for Emerging Technologies
Universities worldwide are experimenting with emerging technologies such as virtual reality, biometrics, immersive environments, and new digital learning tools. Yet many of these initiatives remain isolated pilots that never scale beyond small experiments. Institutions often lack the structures, governance models, and support systems needed to transform experimentation into sustainable educational innovation. At Tec de Monterrey, MOSTLA (Nahuatl for “tomorrow”) was created to bridge this gap. Rather than operate as a traditional innovation lab, MOSTLA functions as a university-wide enablement model that connects technology foresight, experimentation spaces, consulting services, and institutional governance to move emerging technologies from exploration to large-scale educational deployment. This session introduces the MOSTLA framework, including its Tech Radar foresight approach, three-phase innovation pipeline (Open Experimentation, Pilot Testing, and Deployment), and dual top-down/bottom-up governance model. Participants will learn how this structure supports responsible experimentation while enabling scalable integration of emerging technologies across a multi-campus system serving more than 90,000 students and 11,000 faculty. Attendees will leave with a practical framework for designing institutional ecosystems that turn emerging technologies into impactful, scalable learning innovations.
