Empowering Student Employees to Utilize Their Own Innovation to Benefit the College for the Future

This presentation shows a model for transforming student employees from task-oriented support staff into active contributors of long-term technical solutions. Although many colleges use student workers for frontline assistance, their roles often remain limited to repetitive troubleshooting, leaving significant talent untapped. Through peer-to-peer training, mentoring, a creative problem-solving mindset, and intentional project ownership, students are empowered to identify operational challenges and implement sustainable improvements. Students experience classroom and lab technology firsthand, so they are uniquely positioned to design solutions that address real needs. They lead projects such as developing custom tools and resources that continue to benefit the college long after they graduate. This approach has produced more efficient and reliable support, streamlined processes, and long-term solutions. Students report increased engagement, confidence, and stronger job placement outcomes due to their experience leading authentic technical projects. By intentionally developing student talent, we have built a highly capable and sustainable technical support resource for our college.
