From Surveillance to Transparency: Ethical AI Integration for First-Year College Students

This session presents a data-driven case study from first-year writing courses in which structured transparency replaced surveillance. Through the grant-funded initiative Bridging the AI Gap, my first-year composition courses integrated an AI Transparency Journal, scaffolded assignments, and explicit ethical guidance culminating in a multimodal artificial intelligence capstone project. Drawing on classroom innovation, published scholarship framing artificial intelligence as composition’s “fourth literacy,” and measurable student outcomes, I show how thoughtful integration improved retention, grades, and engagement while reducing academic dishonesty cases. Rather than outsourcing thinking, students used artificial intelligence for brainstorming, research, reflection, and revision while developing skepticism toward machine outputs, stronger metacognition, and greater confidence in their own voices. I conclude by sharing outcome data and student reflections describing how this approach helped them become more independent writers and more critical users of artificial intelligence, offering a practical framework for moving institutional conversations away from surveillance and toward transparent teaching.
