It's Not You, It's Me: Brreaking Up with Your Reporting to Create a Sustainable Reporting Ecosystem

Many institutions invest significant time producing polished, static reports, but the outputs may fall short at supporting ongoing analysis and timely decision-making. At the University of Maryland, our Systems and Services Report was delivered as a comprehensive package, including a website, a print-ready PDF, fast facts tailored to different audience personas, and a video to drive engagement. While effective for communication, this model became difficult to sustain amid staffing and financial constraints. In Fall 2025, we shifted from semester to academic yearly reporting to reduce effort while maintaining quality. However, this change created a new challenge: how to preserve access to semester-level metrics for leadership decision-making. Rather than duplicating work, we reimagined our approach by translating key website elements into interactive Power BI dashboards that use the same underlying data sources. This session shares our digital transformation journey toward a sustainable IT reporting ecosystem. It balances static and interactive formats while “breaking up” with traditional reporting limitations. By leveraging a shared data pipeline, we streamline updates and support both annual storytelling and ongoing semester analysis. Attendees will gain practical insights into designing resilient reporting strategies that maximize impact and minimize staff effort in institutional IT analytics.
