Powered by the Cloud: Modernizing Campus IT Infrastructure While Avoiding $10M in Costs

Wednesday, September 30, 2026 | 9:30AM–10:30AM MT
Session Type: Poster Session
Delivery Format: Poster Session
Facing aging infrastructure, rising maintenance costs, and growing scalability constraints, UC Irvine launched an ambitious initiative to migrate over 900 virtual machine workloads from on-premises data centers to the cloud—effectively avoiding an estimated $10 million in capital and ongoing maintenance expenditures while dramatically improving infrastructure agility, resiliency, and security posture. In this session, we share the strategy, wave-based migration methodology, and real-world lessons behind a large-scale cloud migration program; the skills and organizational adaptations we needed to make; and how institutions of all sizes can achieve similar gains in resiliency, security, cost transparency, and IT agility.
