Rethinking the Student SOC: Expanding Cyber Workforce Development beyond Triage
Many higher education institutions have invested in student SOC programs to provide hands-on cybersecurity experience. However, most remain narrowly focused on alert triage, limiting both student participation and real-world readiness. As AI increases alert volume and automates routine analysis, the center of gravity in security operations is shifting away from manual triage toward higher-value activities such as engineering, automation, and risk interpretation. This shift exposes a gap in traditional workforce development models and reveals growing pressure to expand career-ready outcomes. This session introduces a practical model for evolving student SOC programs into a broader cybersecurity pathway. Attendees will learn how to expand beyond analyst-focused roles to include detection engineering, automation, incident response, risk intelligence, compliance, and executive reporting, creating a more scalable and impactful program. We’ll outline how to structure experiential roles, align them to curriculum, and integrate faculty and security teams into a unified operating model. Participants will also explore how to increase student participation through asynchronous and project-based work, without increasing operational burden.
