The Ceiling Is Higher: Replacing Discussion Posts with AI Bot Conversations

In spring 2025, students in two design courses submitted strong work with no words for it—no language, no articulation of their choices. In spring 2026, one variable changed: discussion posts were replaced by AI bot conversations as the foundational assignment. The ceiling of student work rose. The floor rose. And students could tell you why. This session presents year-over-year comparison data from three courses at Pikes Peak State College alongside a full-semester longitudinal dataset of 150+ bot conversations making a single argument: discussion posts measure what students can perform. Bot conversations reveal what they actually understand—and prepare them to do better work. The bot didn’t replace the discussion. It replaced the shallow thinking that students brought to everything that followed.
