Digital Strategy Initiative: Coordinating Accessibility Compliance with 1,000+ Cooks in the Kitchen
In 2023, Indiana University launched an ambitious Digital Strategy Initiative to streamline and improve the way it communicates with students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. The first step was to begin collecting data about the scope and quality of our websites. This effort included an enterprise-wide launch of Siteimprove, a tool to enhance website performance, accessibility, and digital marketing through automated audits. Once IU discovered the size of its accessibility problem, we mobilized leaders, policymakers, content creators, and web developers across 9 campuses and 2,600 websites to clean up our digital campus and resolve millions of accessibility issues. We’ll share how we partnered with Siteimprove, website stewards, our Web Community of Practice, and leaders at every level of the university to make significant progress toward our accessibility goals. Most IU websites decreased their accessibility issues by 90% or more; 289 websites have been retired; and our progress has even positively impacted Siteimprove’s industry benchmark score. We’ll also describe the new governance structures, policies, and procedures we’ve implemented to ensure the quality of our digital campus continues to improve.
