Higher education institutions face unprecedented cybersecurity challenges. From data breaches to ransomware, threats are diverse and ever-evolving. Trinity Cyber and St. Mary's University will present a forward-thinking approach to security for academia, focused on shifting the model from panic-driven responses to robust prevention measures. Speakers will discuss the unique cyber challenges for higher education, including the complexities of protecting vast networks of sensitive information while fostering an open and collaborative academic environment. Drawing on real-world experiences, we will explore innovative technologies that empower educational institutions to anticipate and mitigate cyberthreats before they escalate. Key topics include: 1) Understanding the threat landscape: analyzing the unique cybersecurity challenges of higher education, including the targeting of intellectual property, student data, and research finding; 2) Shifting from reactive to proactive strategies: advocating for a proactive cybersecurity mindset that prioritizes prevention, detection, and response to protect sensitive data and infrastructure; and 3) Fostering a culture of security awareness: recognizing the critical role of faculty, staff, and students in maintaining a secure digital ecosystem, we discuss strategies for promoting cybersecurity literacy and training initiatives to create a culture of vigilance and accountability.
