Gaming the Odds in Their Favor: An Esports, Student Well-Being, and Coordinated Care Endeavor

Tuesday, October 22 | 11:30AM–12:15PM CT | Meeting Room 007AB, River Level
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation/Panel Session
In fall 2023, San Diego State University (SDSU) witnessed a collaborative effort between its Student Affairs, Campus Diversity, and Information Technology Divisions. Their joint mission: to introduce esports and foster community engagement among students. Research linking screen time to depression, sleep deprivation, and loneliness catalyzed this initiative. The newly established SDSU Esports Engagement Center (EEC) includes ten high-powered computers, a driving simulator, Nintendo Switches, and additional console games for student use. The SDSU Esports Engagement Center (EEC) not only provides an array of gaming resources but also operates with a comprehensive approach. It is supported by a Coordinated Care Academic Advisor who resides within the center. Additionally, a holistic data strategy connects student engagement with overall health and well-being assessments, academic performance measures, and identifies underserved students who may not actively participate in EEC activities. Participants will witness the transformative impact of this SA, CD, and IT partnership that demonstrates how implementing a holistic data strategy can be a game changer.
