“Got a Minute?” The Pop-Up Protocol (PUP)™: A Novel Video Methodology for Survey Design

Tuesday, October 22, 2024 | 4:00PM–4:45PM CT | EDUCAUSE Commons, Teaching & Learning Central Poster Area
Session Type: Poster Session
Delivery Format: Poster Session
In today's fast-paced technological landscape, it's essential to comprehend how students and instructors use emerging technologies such as Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to shape future guidelines around these tools. Before conducting a campus-wide GenAI survey, we used the Pop-Up Protocol (PUP)™ to attain the voices of stakeholders?our students and instructors. This video protocol not only informs the development of survey scales?it also ensures we adopt their language and current understanding to help provide an accurate reflection of how they perceive this rapidly evolving technology. Without conducting these video interviews, there was a risk of utilizing external scales that failed to capture the nuanced perspectives of UMD students and instructors. By engaging with individuals who would be surveyed regarding GenAI, the video project aims to authentically represent the voices intended to be included in the GenAI survey, thereby engaging in co-design to gauge our UMD community perceptions and needs. We will share what we learned about this process and how we’ve used it since this initial development!
