Reaping the Benefits of Efficiency: Developing Your IT and Data Governance Programs Together
Higher education institutional investment in IT and reliance on information systems and the data contained in those has grown, and the need for reliable structures to support stakeholder involvement, sound decision-making, and opportunities for knowledg-sharing is critical. A programmatic approach toward IT and data governance provides a framework for the effective and efficient use of investments to support the institutional mission. A coordinated and systematic approach to cross-institutional collaboration helps provide a framework for ongoing coordination, teamwork, investment, and knowledge-sharing. We will present two case studies that describe the experience, outcomes, pain points, and benefits of jointly developing IT and data governance programs at a large, aspiring R1 doctoral university and a small liberal arts and sciences baccalaureate college. With fewer resources to refresh and purchase technology to support faculty, staff, and students, taking advantage of efficiencies in program development that lead to strengthened partnerships and thoughtful resource utilization is the best chance for governance success. Panelists will explain the basic tenets of each governance program, what it looks like to weave their development together, provide two case studies, and deliver recommendations on how to get started.
