The landscape of IT talent acquisition in higher education is becoming increasingly competitive, driven by several factors that include the expansion of remote job opportunities in the tech industry and the gap between open positions and qualified candidates. Consequently, institutions are grappling with policy barriers to hiring out-of-state talent, intensifying the competition for skilled professionals. Despite this, the potential of internships and apprenticeships as talent-sourcing strategies remains largely untapped within higher education IT departments. It stands to reason that institutions committed to community upliftment inherent to their mission should explore these avenues. Collaboration between university and college HR departments and IT hiring managers is essential to reconceptualize talent-sourcing practices such as utilizing skills-based hiring techniques and creating avenues to provide these opportunities. Internships and apprenticeships also provide opportunities for aspiring and new managers to develop leadership and management skills. Many IT departments experience high turnover rates, prompting the crucial question: how can we effectively train and retain talent? We advocate for a paradigm shift toward leveraging internal talent development programs and harnessing the potential of internships and apprenticeships to cultivate increased retention with promising candidates.
